It’s not only about the study score 【马上咨询】

My name is Wang Xi Yue, people call me Jovian as a preferred name at school. I went to Australia in October 2008 as a year 10 student. I finished my VCE course in Toorak College, which locates in the beautiful Mornington peninsula area in Victoria. It was a wonderful place for living and studying as I can see the sea just when I’m having lesson at the classrooms. It’s only takes me 10 minutes to walk down to the beach. The benefit of study abroad is tremendous. I was rewarded 6 excellent awards in year 12 for each of my 5 chosen subjects, additionally with another community social prize. Now I’ve successfully received an offer from Monash University which let me get into my dream course. Here I’m happy to share some of my experience gained during these 2 years with you.

Studying overseas, the subjective attitude becomes the most important thing. You should know your aim of going abroad. Most Asian students are shy, not having any interests to take part in any social activities. That somewhat lead them to enclosed themselves. I think it would be a huge disadvantage for them in studying. It’s not only about improving your English but also about providing yourself a good mood while you study in the school.

I was frustrated and depressed at the first few months because of the strangeness. Compared to universities, high school is a less complex place. You can meet the same people in your year level pretty much everyday, which is different from the life in university. However, mingling with local students is still not an easy thing to do. I encourage students that don’t concern about your language skill, just be yourself.

There are several ways that you can learn the Aussie culture. I was lucky to meet my homestay. They are very friendly, and treat me just like their own family member. I had a chance to pay a visit to the Phillip island with them. I got to know more about Victoria, especially those world-famous landscapes, since the family was always willing to share the travelling story with me. Knowing the landscapes is one important thing to understand their culture. I keep contact with my homestay even though I moving out from their place. 【马上咨询】

While in school, chatting with boarding house staff is another way to learn the culture. The staff at boarding house is nice. They always know our international students. Paying a visit to their house, inviting them to have an afternoon tea, or, having a meal together, you will definitely learn something from the conversation.

At day time, while at school, don’t just talk to your friend from China. During the recess time, in the common room, local students sitting together while our Chinese student sitting in another corner talking in our own language, another Korean group is talking about their own gossip. To break this situation, I think choose some subjects that taken by very few international students is necessary. I took English (different from ESL) and literature in year 11. English is a course only design for the students who has English as their first language. My friend and I became the only two international students who has English as second language taking this course. We were divided into different class, therefore I became the only international students in my English class. It did provide me lots more chance to know the girls. Some students are afraid that they can’t get A+ if they take such subjects. However, I believe learning the culture, making friends with local students is more important than the score in year 11. (I changed into ESL, English as second language in year 12) Literature is another subject taken by very few international students. It’s not like that profound as you think. Also, because of the course, I first time finished reading an English written book in a week. I was very proud of such big improvement.【马上咨询】

In year 12, I took Art. I regretted not taking it in year 11. Because of the Chinese logic, we always think only the guys who can’t learn would take such art course. That’s why I was hesitated to take this course. Finally, I thought I should follow my heart, I want to learn something relevant to art in university, so I choose to take Art in year 12. My advice is always to choose the subject you like. On the contrary, physics, math, subjects like that requires less language skill, which to me is boring to learn. I get very high score on my physics and math, but I learn most in art. Not only the course itself, also because I got many opportunities to have excursion in art class. Paying a visit to NGV (national gallery of Victoria), having morning tea with our art class, having life drawing lesson together, during these activities I get to know more girls. I was the only international girl who has been invited to the local girls party. Study well is not enough never forget to build up your social ability. Reading local news paper, having a facebook account, knowing the most hot teenager issues, getting yourself to attend some local culture activities, shows… all in all, learn to live like an Aussie is my approach.

Also, I took music lesson, joined the school drama and other students group. I don’t allow myself miss any school activities I cold possibly join in. Time management is another important thing I have to learn. Studying overseas could be boring, however, it’s all depends on how you arrange your days. In western country, everyone is a free individual. No one would push you to learn anything. A good balance of study and entertainment is necessary. You need to prepare yourself a good sense of self-control before you going abroad.

Always know your aim. Then go for it! The benefit of study abroad is more than worlds can express.
